Hotel Nemzeti Budapest has a special history. The 120-year old building in the early 1900s was the cultural center of the art world in Budapest and a favorite meeting place for artists due to the close vicinity of the National Theatre.

There once existed a tunnel between the theatre and the hotel. It can be traced back to the basement area. It is told that the actors of the former National Theatre, who used the tunnel to come from the theatre to the Hotel’s restaurant or a discrete room to spend their evening meal with friends, acquaintances, or mistresses in secret.

Even back then the hotel was a prestigious one as it was considered to be the most modern hotel of the country.

According to legend, when Jancsi Rigo was in the hotel restaurant in 1896, he met the Princess of Belgian, Klara Ward. The woman fell in love with Jancsi, and immediately left her husband.
Jancsi asked the hotel pastry kitchen to bake a cake, which could not be resisted. The baker made a chocolate cake and Jancsi seduced her with it, the cake was later named in his honour ‘Rigo Jancsi’.
